Type keywords or truncated words. Use the limiters or pull-down field searching menus to narrow search results.
Word Order / Phrase Searching
Keywords are searched separately, though records with matching word order should appear towards the top of the results list. To search words as a phrase, enclose them in quotation marks.
Examples:
“data mining”
“Environmental Protection Agency”
Truncation
Add an asterisk to include alternate endings to a word stem
A question mark (?) can be used to look for an unknown character within a word.
Examples:
computer* - finds computer, computers, computerized, etc.
wom?n - finds women and woman
Connectors / Boolean Searching
Use AND to separate keywords when using multiple operators. It is implied if you don't type it.
Use OR to broaden your search by looking for any of several words. These words should be nested in parentheses.
Use AND NOT to eliminate specific words from your search.
Examples:
pollution AND (cars OR automobiles) AND NOT diesel
(media OR news) AND (kids or children or teen*)
Proximity Searching
Use ~N to search for words occurring within a certain number (N) of words of each other, in any order. Enclose the words in quotes.
Examples:
"game programming"~3
"cattle trails"~5
Field Searching
To limit the search to a specific field in the records, add these code prefixes:
t:title
a:author
d:subjects
n:notes
Examples:
a:(woody allen) AND d:(new york)
a:keynes AND t:(economic consequences)
